America’s Favourite Guns

Which guns are America's favourites?

It's a tough list to quantify, but CBSNews.com has compiled government and retail statistics to create an informal snapshot.
Specifically, we've cross-referenced the most recent annual report from the firearms with a June 2016 ranking of the best-selling new guns on GunBroker.com, the world's largest online auction site for firearms. We've broken out the most popular guns by category and name, starting with pistols.

Most manufactured: Pistols
Pistols - semi-automatic handguns with magazines that slide into their grips -- are the most manufactured category of American firearm. According to the ATF, more than 3.6 million were produced in 2014.

Number 5 - Glock G19
The Glock G19, a 9mm, was the fifth most popular pistol in June 2016.
Jared Lee Loughner used a 9mm Glock to kill six people and injure others, including U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, in January 2011.

Number 4 - Sig Sauer P938
In June 2016, the Sig Sauer P938 was the fourth most popular semi-automatic pistol.
Small and easily concealable, a Sig Sauer 9mm was one of the three guns Adam Lanza used in the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in December 2012.

Number 3 - Springfield XD-S
The third most popular pistol as of June 2016 was the Springfield XD-S, which weighs only 23 ounces.

Number 2 - Ruger Lightweight Compact Pistol
The Ruger Lightweight Compact Pistol was the second most popular semi-automatic pistol as of June 2016.

Number 1 - Smith & Wesson M&P Shield
Smith & Wesson's M&P Shield 9mm is the best-selling semi-automatic pistol in June 2016.
Two 9mm calibre semi-automatic pistols, one of which was a Smith & Wesson, were used in the December 2015 mass shooting in San Bernardino, California.

Rifles
According to the ATF, rifles were the second most popular type of firearm of 2014, with nearly 3.4 million manufactured in the U.S. Within the larger category of rifles are three subcategories: semi-automatic rifles, bolt-action rifles, and lever-action rifles.
These are the most popular semi-automatic rifles:

Number 4 - DPMS Oracle
The DPMS Oracle considered a "value," was the fourth most popular rifle sold in June 2016.

Number 3 - Ruger AR-556
The Ruger AR-556 is the third most popular rifle in the country.

Number 2 - Kel-Tec SUB-2000
The Kel-Tec SUB-2000 was the second best-selling semi-automatic rifle in June 2016.

This rifle is generally considered a less pricey alternative to the popular (and controversial) AR-15, used in the San Bernardino shooting and the massacre at Sandy Hook.

Number 1 - Smith & Wesson M&P15
The Smith & Wesson M& P15 rifle was the most popular semi-auto rifle in America in June 2016.

Shotguns
According to the ATF, shotguns were the third most manufactured firearms of 2014, with 935,411 produced in the U.S. Within that larger category, there are two subcategories: semi-automatic shotguns and pump-action shotguns.
These are the most popular pump-action shotguns in America:

Number 4 - Mossberg 590A1
The Mossberg 590A1 rifle is the fourth most popular shotgun in the U.S.

Number 3 - Remington 870 Police
The Remington 870 Police was the third most popular shotgun in the U.S. as of June 2016.

A similar Remington 870 shotgun, shown here, was one of the weapons gunman James Holmes used in the killing of 12 people in an Aurora, Colorado, movie theatre in July 2012.

Number 2 - Mossberg 500 tactical
The Mossberg 500 tactical was the second most sold shotgun in the U.S. as of June 2016.

Number 1-Kel-Tec KSG
The Kel-Tec KSG topped the charts for shotguns in June 2016.
The inspiration for this weapon in "Grand Theft Auto IV," the Kel-Tec KSG is significantly shorter than other tactical shotguns on the market. It is also clearly pervasive in popular culture.
